All was silent save for the ever present sound of his mother's breathing. She was asleep and that sent a small grin across his dark features. He would only pe gone for a minute. She didn't have to know.

He remembered the path they had taken days prior when his mother had need of collecting herbs. Hyles loved to go out and despite his mother's warning for him never to go alone, he got to his feet. He was taller and his coat was losing its soft downy fawn fuzz, mane and tail beginning to grow.

Quiet, he had to be quiet. Arasinya's ears were keen as any mothers, even in the webs of sleep. I won't go far. He mentally promised, dragging his gaze away from his mothers sleeping form. Cautious hooves moved over the cave floor like mice paws.

Letting the dim light of his markings lead the way he left the den and made a quick turn, wincing when a hoof carelessly scraped on cold stone. His tail lashed as he grew irritated with his inability for silence. Why did they live in a cave anyway? It all seemed oddly silly to the little colt.

He refused to admit that he was making a bad habit of wandering off when others didn't acknowledge him. It was all simple curiosity. Besides someone should have really made a point to tell him that Oakferns weren't the only thing hiding in these dark tunnels. In this case curiosity didn't kill cats, cats killed fawns. But then again, ignorance is bliss for a while at least...

Hyles started noticing as he walked that the paint he wore was growing dimmer. He frowned, realizing that he could still see, if not better than before. He backed up a few steps and the darkness surrounded him again. He stepped forward again. The glowing ceased. Another step forward. He could see things that were normally hidden in his dark home. What was this?

A look of wonder flooded the fawn's face and he pranced out into the greater light. It was warm and pleasantly so on his dark hide. He must have taken a wrong turn somewhere, but he didn't care. He could see colors. Not the colors of the moss but actual colors. The cave walls were almost... creamy in spite of the plain black he'd previously known them to be.

The colt's chocolate eyes trailed slowly up the wall and then they widened as the stone ended and the blue sky began. A huge bright white sphere stole at his sight. This was not Gaelach.

Only when his eyes started to burn, tears glazing over them and blurring his vision, did he look away. Or was forced to. He shook his head trying to get rid of the blemishes in his gaze. Big reddish blotches that made things look funny.

Soon he had blinked them away. He wouldn't stare at the greater light again. Not for that long. He didn't know to call it the sun. Arasinya, his mother, had only taken him out under the cover of moonlight. This was new and he loved it.

The fawn curled up on the sun baked stone, taking in all the warmth he could gather, periodically moving to warm the rest of his small form. Soon enough he had fallen asleep, what he was supposed to be doing when he'd run off. Hyles lied there for what felt like hours before his ears perked at a familiar voice echoing in the distance.

"Hyles-yles-les-es-s...?"
